If You Cant beat Em... Join Em

Here are some eggs I have been working on for that situation where I'm feeling defeated and need to get the skunk gone. Winter tail water seems to be the place for that, for a quite a few years in a row I have found myself stuck in situations that called for and egg.

I know there are a million different ways that anglers feel about eggs and to tell you the truth, I don't yet know just where I stand on the issue. I'll I can say is the egg worked before when nothing else did.

Now from a tiers point of view, they don't have enough pheasant tail fibers mixed in and beads sound like a bit of a cheat. The little bead eggs in the photo actually do take quite a bit of bench time.

First I wind some white thread where the bead is going to go and tie it off, then I stand a little bump of superglue on top of the thread, as its setting, I place the hole of the bead on the superglue bump, let it set then pretty much weld the bead to the hook with two more coats.

Feel me in... how do you feel about eggs?

Cheating as a tier? Is there really such a thing as an egg pattern? Other than the way they fall out of a fish.

Cheating as an angler?

A brilliant idea for those tough situations?

Low light photo.

Not an egg guy, myself...and I ain't taking the time to criticize folks that do throw 'em.

It's all about preference and what works for individual anglers...

Although that doesn't mean I won't tug your chain occasionally about throwing streamers or dries! ;)

Go ahead and pull that chain "Colorado Angler"! If you don't fish dries, streamers or eggs at some point you must have found the promised land.

I have more egg patterns than I know what to do! I throw them when all else does not work! On my vacation to MI I had to give in due to the fact nothing else would work when you have Kings spewing eggs like a can of beer! Good pics btw!

A very intriguing post! And being from WNY I can only offer you a perspective from an Eastern fly fisherman, and I'm not sure that it would be the same as it is for you guys out there in the West...so here it goes!

If you are talking about the fact that many people feel that using eggs is like cheating - then I would say that we certainly have that same sentiment out here in the East, but because of our great lakes fishery, it doesn't seem to as big of an issue (again this is just my observation.) I do think however that we do have a growing number of fly fishermen that may feel that fishing egg flies would be cheating due to the growth of the Switch/Spey revolution out here in the East.

I also find some similarities in the "dry fly purist" line of thinking, where many of them look down upon those who nymph fish, or God forbid, use a San Juan worm!
I find this really quite sad on many levels. 1st - I have always thought that if you wanted to become a better dry fly fishermen, you needed to have a better understanding of what went on below the surface and 2nd - Tying flies that resemble the natural food items of trout and other fish, may require us to tie a San Juan worm, a nymph, or an egg (this idea was also outlined by Ed Engle). And if we don't try to understand the fish at that level, than it is my belief that we limit ourselves as anglers. Besides why is this argument only used on trout?

Please know that I do not think that most of the fly fishing community has an "Elitist" attitude toward fly fishing, and I have fished with and talked with many others who, even though they decide to just fish dries or spey patterns, do not feel as though other anglers need to adhere to there way of doing things.

But again...this is coming from a guy who lives and fishes in the East!

Keep up the great posts

I'm not going to criticize what anyone else chooses to do as long as it's legal. I joked once about making a corn niblet fly...as long as I don't real corn.

Pretty interesting pattern with the egg being post mounted!

We have eggs in our boxes, and for some reason we always overlook them. People all around us will be catching with eggs, and Dustin will still not put one the end of his line. Since he shies away from them, I have learned that too. However, I do know that when I put one on during a slow day, I caught a few fish...

I have been fishing a beaded egg pattern similar to yours for many years. I prefer to catch fish when I go fishing, sometimes that means using an egg pattern,
