Monster Trout Living Thier Lives

This is what it looks like when were not there...

I watched these trout for longer than I care to admit. The most interesting part of it is the way that they use each other to direct food to their mouths. Like moving rocks, these fish were switching places like a flock of geese heading south and using the other ones position to gain energy and create tiny drifts of food. Pretty wild stuff.

This was during a trip to the cold spot in Colorado with a good friend and blogger ColoradoAngler
Why I was marveling at the big trout by a rock.. Ron was on the other side doing the right thing.

I have a feeling I have stood in that same spot and watched them for a long time as well. Only difference is, I didn't notice the subtleties of energy conservation and drift changing, which after watching the clips, is completely obvious, thanks for sharing!!

**Charlie L. I'm sure you have spent your share of time looking down on that fish mantion. I had to have a sit down just to get relaxed enough to think about what they were really doing... Ya know after spending half the day trying to get my fly to hit the rock and not slide one side or the other. Thats the other thing.. with them sitting there like that its like they're messing with the current and you cant get it in there...

Very cool. I know that spot, since its one of the only rivers I know that the better fish tend to sit in FRONT of the rocks, rather than behind them. It is really difficult to get that drift. More weight and a spot on cast is usually the ticket, but it is definitely a challenge.

Dude...I had no idea you were standing up there snapping pics and vids.

Excellent video of those whales, though...wow. What's hard to gauge is the actual size of those fish...30 inches, easily, on the biggest of the bunch.

I think we need a trip on Big Blue. Soon.

Yo doods! Its Blake. Make your own leader. 2 feet of 20-30 pound on top to hold your indicator. From there 7-8 feet of 3x flouro. Blood knot(keeps your weights in place also). 15-24 inches of 4x or 5x flouro from there depending on the fly. And another 15-24 inches of 5x for the tailing fly. Fish this combo pretty much everywhere and especially in this spot! You'll smack em'!! And size 20-22 PT's or any sort all natural, no sparkle beatis!! GET SOME!!
